‘The Drawing Shop’ is back! Having secured funding for workshops and a years worth of programming, we are excited that the Drawing shop is back! Now with a gallery on the first floor!
The Drawing Shop: Created by Johnsey to have a space where local communities can come and engage with art and make work for free. He has worked in ongoing collaboration with the public, schools and other community groups, to create an ever growing archive of drawings, paintings and sketchbooks with the starting point of mark-making.
This project has generated over 1000 drawings, paintings and sketchbooks of works in progress called ‘The Drawing Shop’ which they invite the public to collaborate on with them. The gallery features a rolling exhibition programme of work that has been made in The Drawing Shop during our time in Hillsborough – the works have been made by members of the public and artists from ArtWorks.
‘The Drawing Shop’ is an inclusive and accessible open-studio environment where the public are invited to engage in free creative sessions with ‘The Drawing Shop’ team, and everyone is welcome! They currently operate on a pop-up basis moving from space to space, and this time they are in Hillsborough and have taken over the old Wilkos.
First floor gallery
These works are a direct response to The Drawing Shop itself and the archive of drawings and paintings making up the collection. Each artist brings their own unique creative perspective to the collaboration.
All the paintings and drawings have been made in the space, using a detail as a starting point, from the world of mark making that floods the shop. Some artists have responded directly, drawing onto the same surface as their chosen detail – some have chosen to create new works, but all have explored a wide range of processes and media. There are no restrictions on the approaches the artists use, and it is left open to
each individual to create their own journey and response through the space.
