1 Westgate Street, London, E8
PV: Thursday 7th November 6-9pm
Open: Friday 8th November 2024 – Saturday 4th January 2025
Curated by AC Larsen, ACTS OF UNION is an exhibition that asks what it means to live and embody a British identity, whether through locality or nationality, in the wake of crumbling Britishness. Amongst culture wars, cost of living crises and party-gate populism, who is the fallacy of the ‘United’ Kingdom actually serving? Within the quagmire of deteriorating public services, culture wars, cost of living crises and anglocentrism, is the fallacy of the United Kingdom beginning to slip? This show will include a range of different mediums including free-standing sculptures, wall-mounted photography and textiles and projected film.
This show brings together up to 12 emerging artists all working in a range of contemporary media. Some of these artists they’ve exhibited with, in shows ‘Metamorphosis’ (2023), Stanley Picker Gallery, ‘Toughness & Tenderness’ (2023), Bermondsey Project Space; ‘Lonsdale Road’ (2022), Drifter Galleries. However, this would be the first time this group is brought together. Engaged with a diverse portfolio of media spanning sculpture, textiles, film, photography and text, some of the primary concerns of each artists practice include immigration, class struggle, BAME experience and LGBTQIA+ experience.
There would be a private view on the opening night, which would include a quiet hour just for the exhibiting artists. This would intend to bring all of the artists together before the show to discuss the exhibition and each other’s practices in a more casual environment. There would also have an artist’s talk evening, where each of the artists could present a short biography and background to their shown work.
