Dance Artists North East
12 Segedunum Way, The Forum Shopping Centre, Wallsend, NE28 8JP
Dance Artists North East is an artist-led initiative providing training opportunities, free research and development space and scratch events for professional dancers based in the region. They are a unique group of 26 artists who have diverse and international experience, with a focus on community engagement.
The group primarily creates dance and movement-based work, often adopting an interdisciplinary and collaborative approach due to their wide range of additional skills and interests including in music, design, visual art and film.
The group plans on scheduling the space for three days each week, dividing usage between shared practice, a professional development seminar, networking and sharing of scratch work open to the public.
Artists bring with them extensive experience in delivering high quality creative sessions for all ages and abilities, from young children to older adults, inclusive of those with additional needs and for adults living with conditions such as Parkinson’s. They hope to bring this passion for engaging the public through movement to their planned programme and aim to keep their work relevant through engaging with local community centres and with North Tyneside Council. The aims of the ‘Ambition for Wallsend’ projects will be explored, helping to breathe life into the high street while increasing accessibility to dance and movement.
Public events will include scratch nights and work-in-progress sharings with artists who have engaged with the space, performing ideas they have been working on. The space will also be used to host creative networking events for individuals across the North East creative sector to meet, exchange ideas and provide artists’ talks in an informal and relaxed environment. Additionally, the group hopes to hold informal site-specific performances across Wallsend to engage further with the public, raising awareness and increasing interest in our use of the studio.
