Marking Time

curated by Allegra Fitzherbert and Sara Marinangeli

Marking Time is a group show celebrating texture and mark-making.

56 – 60 Conduit Street, London W1 2YW
Private view Friday 20th January 6- 9pm (RSVP via Eventbrite here)
Open 21st January – 8th February 2023
Hours: Wednesday – Sunday 12 – 6pm

Marking Time brings together nine emerging women and non-binary artists in a celebration of mark-making and texture, a distinctive characteristic in the case of several of the artists’ work. Textural gradations are summoned across a range of media including photography, drawings, textiles, films of performances and sculptures. The artists explore interactions between interior landscapes and outward experience through their differing mark-making approaches, summoning a range of sensations from whispery tenderness to the raw and visceral.

Ubbing, smudging, scratching, staining, tearing, stitching occurring across drawing, photography, sculpture textiles and more.

About The curators

Allegra Fitzherbert is a visual artist with a background in stage design and is a recent graduate of the Royal Drawing School (2022). Her practice currently centers on drawing and textiles, relying on a dialogue between notebook drawings and writings to unearth motifs and symbols she is drawn to. Recent pieces explore a tension between drama and intimacy, sometimes using models, props and costumes to create scenarios. Alongside drawing she has been creating stitched and appliquéd fabric pieces inspired by banners and bedding to further explore the interplay between drama and intimacy.

Sara Marinangeli (b. 1993 Italy) is a photographer and video artist based in London. In 2019 she received a Distinction in her Master’s Degree in Photography from the Royal College of Art, after participating in the Erasmus program at FAMU and receiving her BA in Fine Arts at the Florence Academy of Fine Arts BA in 2016.

The concept of images-marks strictly connects all her body of work.
Her practice focuses on analogue photography and moving image. Darkroom processes allow her to pull at the connection between the handmade object and time passing.

Selected for the SW Darkroom Residency Award 2019; TheLabyrinth Lab / RCA Award 2019; London Creative Network 2020. Her work has been shown in Italy, England, America, and the Czech Republic

Portfolio and Works in progress

selected by

Eliza Bonham Carter (pictured), Curator and Director of the RA Schools, and Mark Davy, CEO of Futurecity

Eliza Bonham Carter has been a noteworthy contributor to arts education for over twenty years.  From her early days as a senior lecturer in Fine Art at DeMontfort University in 1993 and Head of Fine Art at the University of Reading in 2003, to her current position as Curator and Director of the Royal Academy Schools, since 2006. Graduating in Fine Art from the Royal College of Art, Eliza exhibited widely and has work in both private and public collections. Eliza is Vice Chair of Camden Art Centre and recently stepped down from the Council of the British School at Rome where she was also previously a member of the Faculty of Fine Art.

Mark Davy is a former fine artist who studied at Canterbury College of Art and the Architectural Association. His last exhibition at the RIBA London in 2000 gave its name to Futurecity, set up in 2007 to reflect the growing interest in placemaking and regeneration. He has used the agency to provide a platform that promotes the use of arts and culture, community and wellbeing as a guiding narrative for the development and regeneration of our towns, cities, and urban centres. His work has led to major new funding for the arts in the UK and abroad, and Futurecity has been involved in over 250 cultural projects globally, placing artists in partnership with other disciplines including engineers, landscape architects, developers, and architects.

We offer free temporary project space or more permanent studio space to remove the financial obstacles from displaying and making work.
