Mentorship for our placed creatives – a free resource

As well as giving space for free, we also match all placements with a mentor or career development session to widen creative networks and accelerate professional growth and learning. We then record these 121s so they can be a useful resource for other creatives!

Organised by Hypha Studios, a new charity matching artists with free workspace in vacant properties across the UK. Josh C. Wright to occupied a former Peacocks in Catford, and put on a sculptural exhibition in collaboration with other artists (April 28th to May 1st 2022)

Owl on the Roof 121 with David Ward, Fundraising Consultant

David Ward is a fundraising consultant and Artistic Director of Northern Opera Group. He spent a number of years working in senior fundraising positions for organisations including Northern Ballet, Opera North and the Royal Northern College of Music, before going freelance in 2018. He works with organisations across art forms, and across the country, on fundraising strategies and grant writing. His current clients include Complicité, Trowbridge Town Hall and Magpie Dance

David Griffiths 121 with Rob Clayton documentary photographer

Hypha Studios introduced documentary photographer David Griffiths to documentary photographer and maker of the highly acclaimed ‘Estate’ project (1990/1, 2019), Rob Clayton. Rob Clayton is a full time freelance photographer with over twenty years experience. He specialises in producing imagery for design agencies, corporate companies and publishing companies, while continuing to pursue his own documentary art photography with a specialism in photographing the changing British social landscape

Clare Packham 121 with Michelle Payne, Director and playwright

Hypha Studios hosted creative: emerging Director Clare Packham has a 1-2-1 with Michelle Payne, a director and playwright from Essex – recently working on artist-led programme Future Forms with the Donmar Warehouse. Clare asked her about how to start working in the industry after graduating from university in a pandemic, what she should be doing to building up her portfolio, and any other advice for emerging theatre directors.

Rosa- Johan Uddoh 121 with Katharine Stout, Director of Focal Point Gallery

Hypha Studios hosted Rosa-Johan Uddoh in a temporary studio in 22- 24 Camden Passage in Islington. Here she is in conversation with Katharine Stout, the Director of Focal Point Gallery to discuss her upcoming solo show at Focal Point Gallery in Southend “Practice Makes Perfect” and her response to the current debates about black history within the National Curriculum and urban space.

Tangle Immersive 121 with Gill Wildman, Director of Upstarter Bristol

Gill is a creative business mentor & facilitator. Prior to this, she had a strategic design innovation consultancy with clients including BBC, Microsoft, Facebook and Oculus. Gill and Tangle Immersive talked about their shop space and what this means for Tangle- Harry and Chris’s backgrounds and their visions for what they can do together. What it would take to get them to what feels like success: how to generate enough new work, how to use the space as an incubator, and creating a set of experiments through portfolio projects as seeding examples, create multidisciplinary space for VR, and to become a community studio.
