PV: Thursday, 4th June 2025, 6-9pm
Open: 5 June 2025 – 11 July 2026
‘Walking the Climate Crisis’ will be a multimodal series of events exploring how London is changing and the influences of the climate crisis on this. Each will involve a walk or site visit in central London (the workshops), led by Martha and Nina with a visual artist or creator (the partners). During the visit, participants will collectively create a work for display at No. 1 Poultry, designed and coordinated by each partner. There will be between 4-6 events, per discussions with Hypha Studios and the partners.
Work created by the participants with the partners will be installed within the exhibition space throughout the duration of the residency. We will use Sounds and Cities, an open-source global sound archive, to create sound design for the space. The archive contains original field recordings and artistic remixes exploring our changing relationship to place.
Example workshops, walks or visits, to be developed if application is successful: Losing, expanding and adapting London – from the location of the medieval Wych Street, Holborn, demolished to construct Kingsway; to the contemporary 35 Lincoln’s Inn Fields rebuild. The group will walk with a project architect and artist Sharpay Chenyuè Yuán. Health, mutual aid and escalating emergencies – from St Thomas’ (National Covid Memorial Wall) to Victoria Embankment Gardens (affected by the flood of 1928), with local flooding and mutual aid coordinators, and artist Jess Nash.
The peoples’ parks – visiting Burgess Park, a park created through ‘slum’ London clearance, and guerilla gardening spots in Elephant & Castle, which were the start of the movement. With local guerilla gardeners, housing activists and artist Iro Tsavala. Retrofit, renters’ rights and building safety – visiting two TBC neighbourhood upgrade projects with the London Renters’ Union and artist David Lemm or Simon Hamlyn.
