Bringing together practices that amalgamate ancient and contemporary art, To the Wonder highlights the many inventive ways in which artists excavate knowledge from Ancient Civilisations in order to create new forms of contemporary art. Antiquity remains an important reference point for artists in search of visual and intellectual inspiration. Developed as a research project, To the Wonder brings together drawing, painting, collage, sculpture and installation in order to bring to light the everlasting impact of history on artists seeking to find authenticity in a progress-centred society that is increasingly automated, technocratic and artificial. Reflecting the incredible variety of techniques and themes that have developed across disciplines through a continual process of excavating knowledge, To the Wonder evokes the excitement that emerges from the discovery and study of antiquity. Sharing a fascination with archaeology, the artists and researchers brought together are antiquaries in their own way, engaged with the study, collection and excavation of antiquities, ancient artefacts, historical sites, writings and relics of the past.
