Lieu-tenant is a presentation of sculptural works by nine emerging and established artists curated by Unu Sohn. This group exhibition demonstrates the placeholder as a strategy that collapses the line between temporary and embedded. To be “in lieu of” suggests both void and substitute, while “tenant” implies dwelling. Together, the term lieu-tenant reveals the dual nature of the placeholder: something existing between absence and presence. What begins as a stand-in develops its own identity and significance.
While the artists’ practices share a relationship to the broad genre of clay and ceramics, the exhibition aims to spotlight a deeper connection to the medium and its inherent characteristics.
