Our current political, environmental, cultural & societal systems are encountering possibly insurmountable threats. Perhaps, now more than ever, we need to change the direction of our paths even though many of the systems we have constructed are slow or resistant to changes we may require to address these threats. In relentless “There Is No Alternative” systems of politics, economics & society, how can we effect change?
Change horses midstream is a provocation to consider how change can emerge, suggesting how it may not only be useful to think about changing strategies before it’s too late – but how it could be critical.
This exhibition explores three ideas of considering change: change with nature, change with others & change within the self. These all intersect, allowing for connections between ideas & aesthetics across the nineteen artists’ practices as an encouragement to find new ways to learn about change with empathy & care.
The artists selected for Change Horses Midstream were selected from an open call led by Hypha Studios & MPB for projects related to the open theme of “Change”. From this, Will Jennings selected 19 artists whose work covers differing formats & photographic approaches to create a vibrant, busy & exciting presentation of emerging practitioners.
This exhibition is supported by MPB, the largest global platform to buy, sell & trade used camera gear, recognised as one of the top 10 “Women-Powered” businesses of 2024. MPB lead the 70:14:50 Project UK to address the underrepresentation of women, trans and non-binary people working in photography and videography in the UK. Four inaugural award recipients – Hanna Ali, Roman Manfredi, Violeta Sofia & Paloma Tendero – present work in an exhibition at The Handbag Factory following Change Horses Midstream, details available at: https://www.mpb.com/en-uk/701540
